Discover Your Health With Bulu Box

Tis the season for regret. We know all too well that come January we will all be griping, complaining, belly-aching and carrying on about holiday weight. Not to mention overall health and wellness. As if we didn’t learn the January prior to that or the New Year’s resolution prior to that.

For the past five years I have taken control of my health WAY before the holidays and even the New Year. I tell you, its a daily affirmation to live this way and not give in. Health, fitness, proper diet, these are all a lifestyle. By lifestyle I mean truly a way of living. Craving the life. Feeling cranky if you can’t live this life. But taking everything in stride and knowing, hey, there is tomorrow to reboot and actually acting on those desires; not putting tomorrow off for days, weeks, months and sometimes years. You see I kicked so many bad habits and incorporated some of the smallest ones to make the largest impact. The smallest habit was a daily multi-vitamin. Easy breezy, but what a difference when I don’t take my vitamins.

Let’s say though that you have ridden that “lifestyle” train before and found it didn’t work for you. Nod your head.

Maybe you bought some vitamins with the guarantee they would make an impact, but the only impact you felt was to your wallet. Nod your head.

bulu box, bulu box logoWell you can put an end to that uninspiring and unhelpful way of living with Bulu Box.

So I mentioned to you the money saving coupons. In my Bulu Box I received a $100 off coupon of $160 or more purchase of wine. Wait…what!? So I spend $160, get $100 off and basically I just order a stink load of wine for that little? We go through a lot of wine in our house so this was HUGE! My Bulu Box also had a great vegan protein shake, organic snack bar, and a guide for how the items in my Bulu Box combined with other items would be a recipe for success. I like those kinds of suggestions. Plus, I can try them out to see how they work for me and if they do, then I am sure to purchase the full size samples and continue making those same purchases to come. You see….healthy habit.

Here’s the best part as loyal Five Fish readers, you can receive a three-month subscription to Bulu Box for the low price of just one month! That’s right! Jenkins Jellies

Did you have the same old boring Thanksgiving? How about the same old boring turkey sandwiches following Thanksgiving from all the leftovers? Well why not kick up your holidays, your sandwiches, your meals altogether? Or do you have a foodie or chef extraordinaire in your family for your gift giving? I know personally I have an aunt who is an amazing chef, needless to say I think I inherited my cooking gifts from her and my grandmother, and she is always on the lookout for fabulous foods.

So I know I would love to gift to her some eccentric gifts and foods for everyone to enjoy with her creations. One year I made her a rhubarb chutney, another some black eyed peas and this year I would love to gift her some jenkins jellies hell fire pepper jelly. I was skeptical at first, as with any foodie as to what exactly the consistency and taste would yield on my palate. Surprisingly enough the jelly is amazing!

A burn to the mouth and tongue for sweet to the taste is this amazing delicacy married from the harvesting of fresh peppers and sweet jelly. More over the jelly is made with organic ingredients, no preservatives or artificial colors. The packaging is delectable, with a traditional jelly jar, simple sticker affixed to the front with the quaint rope to fasten the jelly spoon to the side of the jar. A wonderful gift of food that keeps on giving for so many different options for food. We actually had Jenkins Jelly on our turkey meatloaf the other night and boy howdy, this really got my southwestern taste and passion for spice. I could taste the peppers and a bit of habanero or jalapeno, it was awesome to feel the burn and the sweet all at once. But the flavor was piquant enough to fill the senses without the numbing burn from the pepper. The flavor would be wonderful on some southwestern, jalapeno cheddar bisquits that I love to make with my turkey chili.

Now if you really want the proof in the pudding…or in this case the jelly, Hell Fire Pepper Jelly has already received celebrity recognition from Chef Mario Batali, actor Ed Begley, Jr. and actress/cousin Gwyneth Paltrow. In addition to the celebrity endorsement is the philanthropy attached to jenkins jellies which is always a plus for The Fish Family since we love to help our world and community where we can, a percentage of jenkins jellies’ profits go to the Bruce Paltrow Oral Cancer Fund and Green Wish.

Some back history about Jenkins Jellies:

After buying a home in Highland Park with an abundance of fruit trees, L.A. actress Hillary Danner planted a vegetable garden and began making jelly. A family friend encouraged her to create a unique pepper jelly with an extra kick.

Always up for a challenge, Hillary joined with her longtime friends Maria Newman and Chef Jared Levy to do just that. Organically growing a variety of peppers in Hillary’s backyard, she created a jelly with the perfect balance of where sweet meets heat. The end result was their first product: Locally produced, gourmet and handcrafted Hell Fire Pepper Jelly.

Available for purchase online at www.jenkinsjellies.com or at select Dean & DeLuca locations across the country for an SRP of $12 per 11.9 oz jar and $8 for a 4.8oz jar. Sure to be a chef’s favorite as a stocking stuffer or a foodies gift of taste, Jenkins Jellies is sure to be an affordable and delicious gift to enjoy past the holiday season.

“Disclosure: I was provided with a jar of jenkin jellies at no cost in order to test the products’ abilities and give my own personal opinions on it. The opinions I have given are mine and may differ from others but were not influenced by the company or the free product provided.”

Organic Baked Kale Chips Recipe

baked kale chips, kale chips, kaleWhile partaking in my weekly offering with Bountiful Baskets I have recently been receiving a lot of kale in my baskets. I will fully admit I am a novice as to what kale is, was, and how it would have any addition to our dinner table and or menu for meals. But I did find that kale is very high in essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, beta kerotene, and the list goes on. I found some wonderful recipes to add this green leafy gem to stir fry, but I am not a fan of wilty greens. Although spinach is wonderful if steamed properly, I could not quite wrap my noggin around biting down this cabbage cousin. However, no recipes really jumped out at me. So while perusing the dry goods aisle at Whole Foods today I was hit with a stroke of genius, call it an epiphany, of how to serve up kale where everyone in my household would eat it and love this leafy green. Here is an easy kale recipe that is sure to be a hit and great addition to your diet.

The prep for this snack is more than easy and takes very little time, all you need is patience to pat dry your kale after a good rinsing. I had to rinse mine thoroughly, since it was USDA Certified Organic, so I was greeted with a caterpillar who had made a home in the fold of the leafy green vegetable. So be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly or your kale will not turn out the way it should intend.

  • 2T extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Herbes de Provence (optional, for a bit of flair)

Basting brush, cookie sheet, preheated oven to 375 degrees

Take your leaves of kale and slice the leaves from the stalk and then cut into chip size pieces. I sliced all mine jaggedly off the stem/stalk of the leaves so I had silver dollar size pieces. Do this only after you have rinsed well and patted your leaves dry and they must be completely dry or you will have steamed kale instead.

Using your basting brush, baste on the salt and EVOO mixture and place on cookie sheet, dash lightly with salt. Do this until all the pieces are lightly coated and then place the entire cookie sheet in the oven. Cook for 10-15 minutes and checking at the 8 minute mark as to not burn your kale. Remove from oven and serve. Great with dinner, as an anytime snack, or to add that extra something to your meal and table.

Breakfast Pizza Recipe

Sunday mornings are my time to give the man of the house a break and I whip up some of my culinary favorites in the morning for the family. Albeit egg nog french toast or pumpkin pancakes for the coming of fall, but lately we have tickled our taste buds for a bit more of the boring meets eccentric type of cuisine.

A little cafe by my office serves up a WICKED breakfast pizza, it is all sorts of unhealthy with garlic, olive oil, bacon, you name it and this breakfast pizza is topped with the heart stopping additives. While I wanted to copy this recipe of sorts I did not want to steal their thunder nor the replica of the food, I wanted to put a Herring organic spin. Of which I did!

Half dozen organic flour tortillas (super easy to make with organic flour too!)

Morning Star Vegan Sausage

Diced/cubed ham

(yes this is available in organic, you have to hunt for it)

Six Eggs, scrambled

(I add a touch of water while scrambling to make these babies extra fluffy)

Shredded Cheese (to taste)

On a large baking sheet or baking stone, place tortillas flat, topping with the above and add cheese to taste. You can mix up the ingredients and add bacon and or pork sausage, we went for a lower calorie and I love Morning Star sausage due to the vegan component for my kids. Place in oven at 350 degrees until the cheese melts to be sure not to overcook the eggs and meat and serve. My kids loved this new spin on pizza and breakfast.

Dr. Ron’s Doctors Best

We made it to the final day of The Five Fish “FREE” Week with Dr. Ron’s closing out the week.

I have to say that Dr. Ron’s has definitely held up to the claims thus far and believe me I am the biggest skeptic surrounding products that claim to be “all natural” and in this case preservative free.

This final product was the hardest to review, I mean really, how do you judge a multi-vitamin you have only been taking for a week. Hard to tell really. So today was my science experiment day which is why my post wasn’t written until now.
Again here is a bit about Dr. Ron and Dr. Ron’s Doctors Best, Multi-vitamin:
The supplements in this section include formulas and essential nutrients you might want to take to a desert island – or want with you if you’ve missed your connection at O’Hare and a winter storm blows in.
We each have our own unique nutritional needs, but all of us can benefit by including special foods and the basic nutrients they contain in our daily routines. By ensuring substantial intake of nutrients that were abundantly supplied in traditional diets, we help build lasting health and resistance to the inevitable physical and mental decline of ageing. Let’s take a succinct look at each of these ten formulas and nutrients that will be detailed in the next ten pages.
  • Doc’s Best – the next generation. Why take a multi? In a word, insurance. The complete spectrum of nutrients our state-of-the-art vitamin-mineral-antioxidant formula supplies protects against deficiencies. There isn’t a more complete multi – and Doc’s Best is ideal in pregnancy and for children as well.

So here is the demo straight from Dr. Ron’s site:

Brand-X

Dr. Ron’s

Now Dr. Ron’s clearly states that you can try this test yourself…..so I gave it a whirl:

As you can see I compared Dr. Ron’s to the Kirkland Brand (Costco) that we normally use and you can see the results. To make it more true to life I actually used vinegar which is mildly acidic and comparable to stomach acid as opposed to using water.

Have a great Friday and thanks for checking out Dr. Ron’s and Traba Door.

Have a great weekend!!
